What is Travel Loan?
Travel loans appeal to people who want to book a family holiday, a pilgrimage, a trip abroad or a honeymoon without paying the full amount at once. Most are ordinary personal loans, though some travel companies and lenders offer EMI plans directly on packages, with different pricing for each. The money goes to your account, and you pay the airline, hotel or tour operator yourself.
The key issue is that a holiday is a consumption expense. There is nothing to sell later, and the EMI continues long after the trip ends. A loan can make sense for a rare trip with a fixed date or a discounted booking, but a short saving plan often costs far less. This page explains the costs, the paperwork and how to decide whether borrowing is worth it.

Who should consider Travel Loan?
- Salaried travellers who want to book a trip early at a fixed price and repay in a few months.
- Families planning a once-in-years trip, such as an international holiday or a long pilgrimage.
- People who want to preserve savings for other goals and are comfortable with a short EMI plan.
- Borrowers who can pay off the loan quickly, ideally before the next big expense arrives.
Travel Loan eligibility criteria
| Criterion | What lenders typically look for |
|---|---|
| Age | Usually 21 to 58 years, with the loan ending before retirement age for salaried borrowers. |
| Income | Often a minimum of roughly ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month, so the EMI remains comfortable after your regular costs. |
| Credit score | A score of about 700 or above improves your offer. Lower scores may get a smaller amount or higher rate. |
| Employment | Salaried with a stable job, or self-employed with income proof. Short job history can reduce the amount offered. |
| Existing EMIs | Your total obligations are checked against income. A heavy load can mean a smaller loan or a decline. |
| Travel plans | Most lenders do not need a ticket, but a few ask for a booking estimate. Visa or passport details may be requested for international trips. |
Documents required for Travel Loan
- Aadhaar and PAN for KYC
- Last 3 to 6 months' salary slips
- Last 6 months' bank statements
- Income tax returns or Form 16
- Address proof
- Travel estimate or package quotation, where requested
- Passport details for international trips, if the lender asks
How does Travel Loan work, step by step?
- Price the whole trip. Add flights, stays, local transport, visas, insurance, food and a spending buffer. An incomplete budget leads you to borrow too little or overspend on cards.
- Compare with saving first. Check how many months of saving would fund the trip. If the trip can wait six months, saving avoids interest completely.
- Compare loan and EMI offers. Compare personal loan offers with travel company EMI plans, including any fees, and check the annual percentage rate in each Key Fact Statement.
- Apply with income proof. Share KYC, salary and bank details. Some lenders ask for a package quote, especially for larger amounts.
- Receive funds and book. The lender credits your account after sanction. Book through trusted channels and keep receipts and cancellation terms.
- Repay on schedule. EMIs start soon after disbursal, often before the trip happens. Plan your budget so the instalment does not strain you while travelling.

Travel Loan interest rate, fees and charges
A travel loan costs interest plus a processing fee and GST, like any personal loan. The loan adds to the price of the trip, so a ₹2 lakh holiday on a two-year loan could cost noticeably more in total. If the tour operator is offering a discount for upfront payment, compare that saving with the interest you will pay.
- Interest
- Charged on the reducing balance at a rate set by your profile. Shorter tenures cut the total interest.
- Processing fee
- A one-time charge on the amount, plus GST. On a small loan it is a notable part of the cost.
- Late payment fee
- Applied if an EMI is missed, including while you are travelling. Set up auto-debit before leaving.
- Foreign exchange costs
- These are not part of the loan, but international trips add forex and card fees. Include them in your budget.
- Prepayment terms
- Fixed-rate loans may charge for early closure. Check if you plan to clear the loan from a bonus or tax refund.

|---|---|

| Tenure | 36 months |
| Monthly EMI | ₹10,253 |
| Total interest paid | ₹69,118 |

Pros and cons of Travel Loan
Advantages
- Lets you lock in a trip or a discounted booking early
- Keeps savings available for other needs
- Fixed EMIs make the cost predictable
- No collateral is required
Limitations
- You pay interest on a purchase that leaves no asset
- The EMI continues long after the trip is over
- Cancellations and refund delays can leave you paying for a trip you did not take
- Easy to overspend on the trip because funds are available upfront
Mistakes to avoid with Travel Loan
- Financing a trip you cannot repay quickly
- If the loan will run longer than the memory of the holiday, it is too large. Choose a tenure of one or two years at most and a trip that fits the budget.
- Ignoring cancellation rules
- If a trip is cancelled, the loan still must be repaid while the refund may be slow or partial. Check refund policies and consider travel insurance before booking.
- Using the loan for extras
- Borrowing for the core cost, then spending beyond it on a card, doubles the debt. Set a daily spending limit and stick to it.
- Not comparing EMI plans with loans
- Travel companies may advertise zero-cost EMI that hides a fee or removes a discount. Compare the total you pay against a plain personal loan or a card EMI.
Travel Loan compared with similar loans
- Travel Loan vs Personal Loan
- A travel loan is a personal loan with a holiday purpose. The terms are usually the same, but a general personal loan may offer larger amounts and longer tenures. Choose based on the annual percentage rate and fees, not the product name.
- Travel Loan vs Instant Personal Loan
- An instant personal loan is faster and smaller, and it can help with last-minute bookings. It usually costs more, so it suits short, quickly repaid amounts. A planned trip allows time to compare cheaper standard loan offers.
- Travel Loan vs Wedding Loan
- A wedding loan is larger and covers many costs, sometimes including a honeymoon. If travel is part of wedding plans, a single loan can be cheaper than two. For a holiday alone, a smaller, shorter travel loan is easier to manage.
Rules and regulations that apply to Travel Loan
Regulated lenders must share a Key Fact Statement before you accept, showing the annual percentage rate, fees and total repayment. For digital loans, funds must go directly to your bank account and a look-up period must be offered. Overseas travel spending has its own foreign exchange rules, separate from the loan.
Rules that protect you, with the source
- Key Fact Statement. For retail and MSME loans sanctioned from 1 October 2024, the lender must give you a KFS with the annual percentage rate and a repayment schedule before you sign, and cannot charge a fee that is not in it. RBI circular, 15 April 2024.
- Pre-payment charges. For floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, no pre-payment or foreclosure charge can be levied. RBI Directions, 2 July 2025.
- Free credit report. Every credit bureau must give you one free full report with score each calendar year. RBI notification, 1 September 2016.
- Complaints. If the lender does not resolve a complaint within 30 days, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman free of charge. Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021 · file at cms.rbi.org.in.
Travel Loan: frequently asked questions
Can I get a loan for a foreign trip?
Yes, since most travel loans are personal loans, you can use the money for an international trip. The lender looks at your income and credit, not your destination. Remember that forex charges, visa fees and travel insurance add to your costs, so budget for them separately.
Is a travel loan a good idea?
Rarely, unless you can repay quickly. A holiday leaves no asset, so interest is an added cost. It can make sense for a rare trip with a fixed date or a discount larger than the interest. Otherwise, saving for a few months is usually cheaper.
What is the interest rate on a travel loan?
Rates follow personal loans, roughly 11% to 24% a year, plus a processing fee. Your credit score, income and employer set the price. Zero-cost EMI plans from travel companies may hide fees or reduce discounts, so compare the total you pay.
Can I get a travel loan without income proof?
It is unlikely. Lenders need to see that you can repay, usually through salary slips, returns or bank statements. Some digital lenders accept bank statement analysis instead of formal proof. Anyone promising a loan with no checks at all should be avoided.
What if I cancel my trip after taking the loan?
You must still repay the loan, since it is separate from the booking. Any refund goes to you from the airline or operator, often with deductions and delays. You can use the refund to prepay the loan. Check cancellation terms and consider travel insurance first.
Is a credit card EMI better than a travel loan?
It depends on the offer. Card EMIs can be convenient for specific bookings, but processing fees and interest can be similar to a personal loan, and they use up your card limit. Compare the total payable and any fees on both options before choosing.
How long should a travel loan be?
Keep it short, ideally 6 to 24 months. A long tenure turns a holiday into a debt that outlasts the memories and increases the interest. If you need more than two years to repay, the trip probably costs more than your budget can support.
