Overview of consumer & lifestyle loans in India
Consumer and lifestyle loans finance everyday purchases that cost more than one month's income: a smartphone, a laptop, a refrigerator, a television or a camera. They are offered at stores and on shopping platforms through EMI cards, card EMIs and point-of-sale loans. Amounts are small, often between ₹5,000 and ₹3 lakh, and the lender usually pays the seller directly while you repay in monthly instalments.
The marketing around these loans often stresses zero down payment and no-cost EMI. In practice, interest is usually recovered through a lost cash discount, a processing fee or a higher price, and 18% GST applies on the interest and fees. Quick approval also makes it easy to stack several EMIs. This page helps you compare the real cost of each option and match the tenure to how long the product will last.

How to choose between consumer & lifestyle loans
- Compare against the cash price. Find the lowest cash price after offers, then compare it with the total you pay on EMI. The difference is the true cost of finance, whatever the label says.
- Add every fee and GST. Include the processing fee and 18% GST on interest and fees. A small fee on a short loan raises the annual cost more than most buyers expect.
- Match tenure to product life. Phones and gadgets age fast, so keep tenures short. Appliances and laptops last longer, so a 12 to 24 month tenure is easier to justify.
- Cap your total EMIs. Add up all running EMIs before taking a new one. Keep the total within a share of take-home pay that still leaves room for emergencies.
- Read the Key Fact Statement. Check the annual percentage rate, late charges and foreclosure terms in the written summary. Ask which regulated lender is giving the loan, not just which app or store.

Consumer & Lifestyle Loans: frequently asked questions
Is no-cost EMI really free in India?
No, not in effect. The lender still earns a return, which usually comes from a discount you lose, a processing fee or a higher listed price. GST at 18% on the interest is also billed. Compare the EMI total with the best cash price to see the real cost.
What is the difference between an EMI card and a credit card EMI?
An EMI card gives a pre-approved limit for partner stores, with each purchase becoming a small loan. A credit card EMI converts a purchase on your credit card into instalments and uses your card limit. Fees, interest and offers differ, so compare the total payable under each.
Do consumer loans need a credit score?
Lenders check your credit report, and a score around 700 or above improves approval and pricing. Some offer small amounts to first-time borrowers with thin histories, often with a down payment. There is no fixed cutoff, and approval depends on the lender's assessment.
How much GST is charged on loan interest?
Interest and processing fees on retail loans for personal purchases attract GST at 18% in most cases. It is added to the interest portion, so even offers advertised as zero-interest can show a small GST charge. It appears in the loan summary or Key Fact Statement.
Which is cheaper, a personal loan or a product EMI?
It depends on the total payable. A product EMI may be cheaper if the seller or brand subsidises the interest, but often a personal loan with a clear rate and a smaller fee is competitive on larger purchases. Calculate both totals at the same tenure.
What happens if I miss a consumer loan instalment?
You are charged a late fee and, if an auto-debit fails, a bounce charge. The missed payment is reported to credit bureaus and lowers your score. If you expect trouble, contact the lender before the due date to ask about a revised schedule.
