Auto Rickshaw Loan in India

By KhatuLoans Editorial Team, edited by Hemant Kumar · Updated · Next review January 2027 · Information only, not a lender

An auto rickshaw loan finances a three-wheeler passenger or cargo vehicle, whether petrol, CNG, diesel or electric. Loan amounts are small, often ₹1 lakh to ₹4 lakh, and lenders may fund 80% to 90% of the price. Your licence, permit position and daily earnings matter more than a high credit score.

What is Auto Rickshaw Loan?

An auto rickshaw loan helps a driver move from renting a rickshaw each day to owning one. The loan covers a three-wheeler used for passengers or for light goods. Because the ticket is small, lenders keep paperwork short, but they still check your licence, your local permit and whether you can pay the EMI from daily earnings.

This is a livelihood product, so the details are very different from a car or truck loan. Permits are often limited in number in some cities. Electric three-wheelers have a higher price but lower running costs. The lender may also deal with small-ticket borrowers who have thin credit records. This page explains how it works and what to watch for before you commit.

  • Drivers moving to CNG or electric auto rickshaws to cut fuel costs
  • Small traders who need a cargo three-wheeler to carry goods short distances

Auto Rickshaw Loan eligibility criteria

CriterionWhat lenders typically look for
AgeUsually 21 to 60 at the end of the loan. Some lenders accept slightly older applicants with a co-applicant.
Driving licenceA valid licence for a three-wheeler or transport vehicle is needed. A commercial badge may be required under local rules.
Local permitIn many cities a permit is needed to run a rickshaw for hire. Lenders check that you have one or can obtain it.
Earnings and residenceLenders look at your daily earnings, stable local address and any prior rickshaw experience.
Credit recordMany small borrowers have thin credit files. A clean record helps, but some lenders use references and local knowledge.
Vehicle detailsThe three-wheeler must be a recognised make with valid registration. Used vehicles are accepted only up to a certain age.

Documents required for Auto Rickshaw Loan

  • Identity proof such as Aadhaar, PAN or voter ID
  • Address proof such as a utility bill or rent agreement
  • Driving licence with transport endorsement or badge where required
  • Permit or permit application papers, if the city requires them
  • Bank statements or proof of daily income, if available
  • Proforma invoice from the dealer for the chosen three-wheeler
  • Passport size photographs and guarantor details if requested

How does Auto Rickshaw Loan work, step by step?

  1. Pick the vehicle and fuel type. Compare petrol, CNG, diesel and electric options on price, running cost and permit rules. Electric three-wheelers cost more upfront but are cheaper to run.
  2. Check the permit position. Find out whether your city restricts rickshaw permits, how long they take and what they cost. A vehicle without a permit cannot run for hire.
  3. Apply with identity and licence. Submit your documents, along with income proof where you have it. Lenders often verify your address and speak to a reference.
  4. Pay the down payment. You pay a margin of roughly 10% to 20%, plus registration and insurance. Some schemes for electric vehicles reduce the effective price.
  5. Registration and delivery. The dealer delivers the rickshaw after registration with hypothecation to the lender. Insurance is arranged before you start running.
  6. Repay through EMIs. EMIs are small and may be monthly or, with some lenders, more frequent. After the last EMI you receive a no-dues letter and hypothecation is removed.

Auto Rickshaw Loan interest rate, fees and charges

Auto rickshaw loans are small but can be costly in percentage terms, because lenders price in the risk of thin credit files and uneven earnings. Look beyond the EMI. Processing fees, insurance, and permit costs add to your outlay. Ask for the Key Fact Statement and compare the total amount you will repay, as some lenders quote flat rates that look lower than they are.

Processing fee
Often 1% to 3% of the loan, which can be a visible cost on a small ticket.
Insurance
Commercial three-wheeler insurance is required and includes liability cover to third parties.
Permit and registration fees
Permit, registration and local fees vary by city and may be high where permits are scarce.
Flat versus reducing rate
A flat rate charges interest on the full amount for the whole loan, so the real annual cost is much higher than the quoted number.
Late payment charges
Penal fees on missed EMIs and bounced auto-debits add up quickly on small loans.

Worked example: what this loan really costs

Loan amount₹8,00,000
Interest rate (reducing balance)9.5% a year
Tenure60 months
Monthly EMI₹16,801
Total interest paid₹2,08,089
Total repaid₹10,08,089

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1), with r the monthly rate. Processing fees, GST and insurance are extra; the annual percentage rate in the Key Fact Statement includes them. Check the figures in our Vehicle Loans EMI calculator.

Pros and cons of Auto Rickshaw Loan

Advantages

  • Replaces daily rent with ownership and lets you keep your full earnings
  • Small ticket and short paperwork compared with larger vehicle loans
  • Electric and CNG options can cut daily fuel spend
  • Builds a repayment record that helps with later credit

Limitations

  • Daily earnings vary with weather, festivals and local demand
  • Rates can be high for small borrowers with thin credit files
  • Permit availability and cost can delay or block earning
  • Repossession risk if you miss several EMIs

Mistakes to avoid with Auto Rickshaw Loan

Not checking the quoted rate type
Ask whether the rate is flat or reducing. A flat rate of 10% can cost much more than a reducing rate of 10%, so compare using the total repayment.
Buying before securing a permit
If your city requires a permit, apply first or confirm availability. A rickshaw that cannot run for hire still carries EMIs.
Ignoring battery warranty on electric models
Check battery warranty, charging access and replacement cost. Battery issues can stop earnings for days while EMIs continue.
Borrowing from informal sources to cover EMIs
High-interest informal loans can trap you in a cycle. Talk to your lender early if income falls instead of borrowing elsewhere.

Auto Rickshaw Loan compared with similar loans

Auto Rickshaw Loan vs Taxi Loan
A taxi loan finances a four-wheeler cab with a larger ticket, higher insurance and platform or permit conditions. An auto rickshaw loan is smaller and shorter, and approval relies heavily on local permits and daily earnings rather than platform history.
Auto Rickshaw Loan vs Two Wheeler Loan
A two-wheeler loan is for personal transport and has lighter insurance and no commercial permit. An auto rickshaw loan funds a three-wheeler for income, with commercial registration, permit checks and a rate that reflects that use.
Auto Rickshaw Loan vs Commercial Vehicle Loan
A commercial vehicle loan covers larger goods and passenger vehicles with bigger loan amounts and business documents. An auto rickshaw loan is a small-ticket product aimed at individual drivers and often has simpler documentation.

Rules and regulations that apply to Auto Rickshaw Loan

Lenders must give a Key Fact Statement showing the annualised rate, fees and total repayment before you sign, which helps you spot flat-rate pricing. Permits, driver badges and any electric vehicle subsidy rules are set by state and central authorities, not the lender, so check them directly. Keep your no-dues letter after closing.

Rules that protect you, with the source

  • Key Fact Statement. For retail and MSME loans sanctioned from 1 October 2024, the lender must give you a KFS with the annual percentage rate and a repayment schedule before you sign, and cannot charge a fee that is not in it. RBI circular, 15 April 2024.
  • Pre-payment charges. For floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, no pre-payment or foreclosure charge can be levied. RBI Directions, 2 July 2025.
  • Free credit report. Every credit bureau must give you one free full report with score each calendar year. RBI notification, 1 September 2016.

Auto Rickshaw Loan: frequently asked questions

Can I get an auto rickshaw loan with no credit history?

Possibly. Many first-time borrowers have no credit file, and some lenders assess licence, address, references and earnings instead. Expect a guarantor or a larger down payment, and a higher rate. Approval depends on the lender's own assessment of your repayment ability.

How much down payment is needed for an auto rickshaw?

Roughly 10% to 20% of the price for many borrowers, with registration and insurance extra. A larger down payment lowers the EMI and can improve the terms offered. Electric three-wheelers may have different down payments because of higher prices.

Can I get a loan for an electric auto rickshaw?

Yes, many lenders finance electric three-wheelers, and some offer special terms. Prices are higher than for CNG models, but running costs are lower. Check battery warranty, charging access and any state or central subsidy rules that apply to your purchase.

What is the EMI on a ₹2.5 lakh auto rickshaw loan?

As a rough illustration, ₹2.5 lakh at about 16% a year over 3 years gives an EMI near ₹8,800. Your actual EMI depends on the rate type and tenure. Always ask whether the rate is flat or reducing before comparing.

Do I need a permit before applying for the loan?

It depends on your city. Where permits are required, lenders usually want to see the permit or proof that one will be issued. Applying without a clear permit plan can lead to delays or rejection. Check local transport office rules first.

Can I buy a used auto rickshaw with a loan?

Some lenders finance used three-wheelers up to a certain age, after inspection. The tenure is shorter and the rate higher than for a new vehicle. The registration, permit and insurance papers must be clear and transferable to your name.

What if I cannot pay my auto rickshaw EMI one month?

Contact the lender before the due date. Missed EMIs attract penalties and are reported to credit bureaus. Some lenders may allow a short extension or a revised schedule. Repeated default can lead to repossession of the rickshaw, which would end your income.
