What is Commercial Vehicle Loan?
A commercial vehicle loan is a secured loan used to buy a vehicle that earns income, such as a light goods carrier, a pickup, a tipper, a tempo, a mini bus or a heavy truck. The vehicle itself is the security. The lender registers a hypothecation on the registration certificate, and it is removed only after you repay the loan in full.
Lenders look at the business the vehicle will run, not only at your salary. A first-time buyer with a contract in hand may be treated differently from an operator who already runs several vehicles. This page explains how the product works, what it costs and where buyers go wrong, so you can compare options with clear expectations.

Who should consider Commercial Vehicle Loan?
- Transporters buying a first or additional truck, tempo or pickup for goods movement
- Taxi, cab and school or staff bus operators who run passenger vehicles under a permit
- Small contractors and traders who need a utility vehicle such as a tipper or a mini truck
- Fleet owners replacing old vehicles who want to spread the cost over monthly instalments
Commercial Vehicle Loan eligibility criteria
| Criterion | What lenders typically look for |
|---|---|
| Age | Applicants are usually between 21 and 65 at the end of the loan. Some lenders prefer 25 or older for heavy vehicles. |
| Driving or operating experience | Many lenders want one to three years in transport or a related trade. First-time owners may need a stronger co-applicant. |
| Income and cash flow | Lenders estimate monthly earnings from the vehicle and your other business. Contracts, trip records or bank statements help prove this. |
| Credit record | A clean repayment history helps with pricing. A weak score may still be considered with a higher down payment, at a higher rate. |
| Vehicle type and age | New vehicles from approved makers get the best terms. Used vehicles are accepted only up to a certain age and after inspection. |
| Permits and licences | The driver needs a valid licence for the vehicle class. Goods and passenger vehicles may also need a valid permit or fitness certificate. |
Documents required for Commercial Vehicle Loan
- Identity proof such as Aadhaar, PAN or voter ID
- Address proof for the current and permanent address
- Passport size photographs and a signed application form
- Last 6 to 12 months of bank statements
- Income tax returns, GST registration or business proof where available
- Proforma invoice or quotation from the dealer for the vehicle
- Driving licence, and permit or contract details for the vehicle's intended use
How does Commercial Vehicle Loan work, step by step?
- Choose the vehicle and get a quote. Pick the make, body type and payload that suit your route. Get a proforma invoice from the dealer, as the lender calculates the loan against the ex-showroom price and body-building cost.
- Compare lenders and apply. Share your details with lenders, along with identity, income and business documents. Lenders check your credit record, your experience and the expected earnings of the vehicle.
- Pay the margin money. You pay the down payment, usually 10% to 30% of the price. Heavy and used vehicles tend to need more. This margin protects the lender if the vehicle loses value.
- Verification and approval. The lender may visit your office or yard, inspect a used vehicle, and verify your references. After approval, you receive a sanction letter with the rate, tenure and charges.
- Disbursal and registration. The lender pays the dealer directly. The vehicle is registered in your name with a hypothecation entry in favour of the lender, and insurance is arranged.
- Repay through EMIs. You repay through monthly EMIs, often by auto-debit. Some lenders offer seasonal or step-up schedules for operators with uneven income. After the last EMI you get a no-dues letter and the hypothecation is removed.

Commercial Vehicle Loan interest rate, fees and charges
The interest rate is only part of the cost. Commercial vehicle loans usually carry a processing fee, mandatory insurance, documentation charges and, on some loans, a charge for closing early. Rates are often higher for used vehicles and first-time operators. Ask for a Key Fact Statement and add all charges before you compare offers.
- Processing fee
- Often 1% to 3% of the loan, charged upfront or deducted from the amount released.
- Insurance
- Comprehensive motor insurance is usually compulsory during the loan, and the premium for a commercial vehicle is higher than for a private one.
- Documentation and RTO charges
- Fees for agreement stamping, registration and the hypothecation entry, paid at actuals.
- Prepayment or foreclosure charge
- Some lenders charge a percentage of the outstanding balance for early closure. Ask before signing.
- Late payment penalty
- A penal charge applies on missed EMIs and a returned cheque or failed auto-debit can add a bounce fee.

Pros and cons of Commercial Vehicle Loan
Advantages
- Finances a large share of the price so you can start earning sooner
- Fixed EMIs make monthly planning easier
- Flexible repayment schedules may be available for seasonal income
- The vehicle earns money that can help repay the loan
Limitations
- The vehicle can be repossessed if you default on repayment
- Insurance, permits and maintenance add to running costs
- Used or older vehicles carry higher rates and shorter tenures
- Income from freight or passengers can be uneven, while EMIs are fixed
Mistakes to avoid with Commercial Vehicle Loan
- Overestimating monthly earnings
- Do not plan EMIs on your best month. Allow for idle days, repairs, tyre changes, fuel price swings and slow payments from clients.
- Ignoring the permit and fitness costs
- A passenger or goods vehicle may need a permit, fitness certificate and tax. Add these to your budget, as running without them can lead to fines.
- Skipping the insurance details
- Check that the insured value, third-party cover and add-ons match the vehicle. A weak policy can leave you paying the loan on a damaged vehicle.
- Comparing only the EMI
- A low EMI can hide a long tenure or heavy upfront fees. Compare the total repayment amount and the all-in annual cost.
Commercial Vehicle Loan compared with similar loans
- Commercial Vehicle Loan vs Truck Loan
- A truck loan is a narrower product for goods carriers, where payload, axle type and freight contracts drive the loan. A commercial vehicle loan is the wider category and also covers buses, taxis and utility vehicles that carry passengers or services.
- Commercial Vehicle Loan vs Taxi Loan
- A taxi loan finances a passenger vehicle under a taxi or cab permit and is assessed on trip demand and driver income. A commercial vehicle loan can cover many vehicle types, usually with larger tickets and different permit rules.
- Commercial Vehicle Loan vs Business Loan
- A business loan is general purpose money with no specific asset behind it, so it is often costlier and shorter. A commercial vehicle loan is tied to the vehicle you buy, which usually means a lower rate and longer repayment.
Rules and regulations that apply to Commercial Vehicle Loan
Lenders must give you a Key Fact Statement before you sign, showing the rate, fees and total cost. RBI's prepayment rules bar foreclosure charges only on certain floating-rate loans, and most vehicle loans are fixed rate, so a closure charge may apply. Check the foreclosure terms in your agreement and keep the no-dues letter.
Rules that protect you, with the source
- Key Fact Statement. For retail and MSME loans sanctioned from 1 October 2024, the lender must give you a KFS with the annual percentage rate and a repayment schedule before you sign, and cannot charge a fee that is not in it. RBI circular, 15 April 2024.
- Pre-payment charges. For floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, no pre-payment or foreclosure charge can be levied. RBI Directions, 2 July 2025.
- Free credit report. Every credit bureau must give you one free full report with score each calendar year. RBI notification, 1 September 2016.
- Complaints. If the lender does not resolve a complaint within 30 days, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman free of charge. Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021 · file at cms.rbi.org.in.
Commercial Vehicle Loan: frequently asked questions
How much down payment is needed for a commercial vehicle loan?
Usually 10% to 30% of the vehicle price, depending on the lender, vehicle type and your profile. Used or older vehicles and first-time operators often need a larger margin. A bigger down payment reduces the EMI and can help you get a better rate.
Can I get a commercial vehicle loan if I am a first-time buyer?
Yes, it is possible, but lenders often ask for more proof. A signed contract, driving experience, a co-applicant with a transport background or a larger down payment can help. Approval depends on the lender's assessment of your cash flow and repayment capacity.
Can I finance a used commercial vehicle?
Many lenders finance used commercial vehicles up to a certain age, after an inspection and valuation. Expect a lower loan percentage, a shorter tenure and a higher rate than for a new vehicle. The vehicle's papers, permit and insurance history must be clear.
Is a commercial vehicle loan available for a vehicle used for personal purposes?
No. A commercial vehicle loan is meant for vehicles that earn income and carry a commercial registration. If you want a vehicle for personal use, a car loan or two wheeler loan is the right product. Using a vehicle differently from the sanctioned purpose can cause problems.
What is the EMI on a ₹10 lakh commercial vehicle loan?
The EMI depends on the rate and tenure. As a rough illustration, ₹10 lakh at about 14% a year over 5 years comes to roughly ₹23,000 a month. Use an EMI calculator with the actual rate and check the total repayment, including fees.
What happens if I miss EMIs on a commercial vehicle loan?
Missed EMIs attract penal charges and are reported to credit bureaus, which lowers your credit score. If defaults continue, the lender can repossess the vehicle after notice and sell it to recover dues. Talk to the lender early about rescheduling if your income drops.
Do I need a guarantor for a commercial vehicle loan?
Not always. Strong applicants with a good record and down payment may not need one, but a guarantor or co-applicant is often asked for with a thin credit history, a used vehicle or a larger loan. The requirement varies by lender and profile.
