Electric Two Wheeler Loan: Financing an E-Scooter or E-Bike

By KhatuLoans Editorial Team, edited by Hemant Kumar · Updated · Next review January 2027 · Information only, not a lender

An electric two wheeler loan finances an e-scooter or e-motorcycle that is registered for road use. Under current GST rules EVs attract a 5% rate. Loans are usually ₹80,000 to ₹2.5 lakh, tenure is often 2 to 5 years, and lenders pay attention to battery warranty. Subsidies and incentives change, so verify them before you buy.

What is Electric Two Wheeler Loan?

An electric two wheeler loan looks like a petrol scooter loan but has a different cost profile. The sticker price is higher because of the battery, yet running costs per kilometre are much lower. Lenders usually fund a share of the on-road price, and some offer longer tenures to match the battery warranty period.

The risks also differ. Battery health decides how long the vehicle works well and what it fetches at resale. Charging at home needs a safe plug point, and the right model depends on your daily distance. Incentives on electric two-wheelers have been revised over time, so treat any subsidy as something to confirm in writing, not to assume.

Who should consider Electric Two Wheeler Loan?

  • City commuters who ride a fixed daily distance and can charge at home or work, and want to cut fuel costs.
  • Delivery partners and gig workers with high daily mileage who benefit most from the low cost per kilometre of an electric vehicle.
  • Households in states that offer registration or road tax relief on electric two-wheelers, subject to current state rules.
  • Buyers who want a quiet, low-maintenance vehicle and accept a higher upfront price in return for lower running costs.

Electric Two Wheeler Loan eligibility criteria

CriterionWhat lenders typically look for
AgeUsually 21 to 60 or 65 at maturity, with some lenders accepting 18 to 21 year olds with a co-applicant.
IncomeMonthly income requirements are similar to those for petrol scooters, often roughly ₹10,000 to ₹15,000. The higher price of EVs may need a slightly higher income.
EmploymentSalaried applicants usually need a few months to a year in the current job, while self-employed and gig workers can use bank statements.
Credit scoreA score of 650 to 700 or above is helpful. Some lenders consider thin files for small loans with a higher rate or a co-applicant.
Vehicle registration classThe vehicle must be a registered, high-speed electric two-wheeler. Low-speed models that do not need registration may not qualify, because the lender cannot record hypothecation.
Battery and modelSome lenders limit funding to models from established manufacturers with a clear battery warranty and service network.

Documents required for Electric Two Wheeler Loan

  • Identity proof such as Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or driving licence
  • Address proof such as Aadhaar, utility bill or rent agreement
  • PAN card or Form 60
  • Salary slips and bank statements or ITR for income proof
  • Dealer quotation or invoice showing the model, battery details and on-road price
  • Valid driving licence, where required for the vehicle category
  • Signed application, photographs and EMI mandate or cancelled cheque

How does Electric Two Wheeler Loan work, step by step?

  1. Match range to your use. Check the real-world range, not just the claimed figure. Think about your daily distance, load, roads and the chance you will need to charge outside.
  2. Get the on-road quote. Ask for an itemised quote showing ex-showroom price, GST, registration, insurance and any state relief. Check whether a charger is included.
  3. Apply and compare. Compare rate, fees and tenure from several lenders. Ask how they treat the battery warranty and whether any incentive affects the loan amount.
  4. Sanction and agreement. Review the Key Fact Statement, then sign the agreement and EMI mandate. Check what happens if the manufacturer changes warranty terms.
  5. Down payment and delivery. You pay the down payment and the lender pays the dealer. The vehicle is registered with hypothecation noted on the RC.
  6. Repay and release. Pay EMIs on time and keep service records and battery data. After closure, collect the no-objection certificate and remove hypothecation.

Electric Two Wheeler Loan interest rate, fees and charges

The purchase price of an electric two-wheeler is higher than a petrol equivalent, so the loan is usually larger. Running costs are lower, but the battery is the item to watch. A replacement battery outside warranty can cost a large share of the vehicle price, so the true cost depends on how long the battery lasts and how you charge it.

Interest
Quoted flat or reducing. Ask for the APR. Some lenders may offer EV-specific rates, but others do not.
Processing fee
A flat amount or a share of the loan plus GST. Fixed fees weigh more on small loans.
Insurance
Comprehensive cover is usually needed. Check that the policy covers the battery and charger, and not only the body.
Battery replacement
Outside the warranty, a new battery can be a major expense. Read the warranty period and the kilometre limit.
Charger and electricity
A home charger may be bundled or sold separately. Electricity costs are low per kilometre but should be in your budget.

Electric Two Wheeler Loan: frequently asked questions

Is it easy to get a loan for an electric scooter?

It is similar to a petrol scooter loan. Lenders check income, credit history and age. The higher price of an electric model means a larger EMI, which can affect eligibility. Some lenders prefer established brands with a clear battery warranty and service network.

What is the GST on electric two-wheelers?

Under current GST rules, electric vehicles carry a 5% rate, which is lower than the rate on petrol two-wheelers. The GST Council sets rates and can revise them. Ask the dealer to show the GST line on your quotation so you can confirm what applies.

Is there a government subsidy on electric two-wheelers?

Central incentives have existed in the past, but they have been revised and, for some schemes, have ended or reduced. Some states offer road tax or registration relief. Do not plan around a subsidy until the dealer confirms in writing that it applies to your model.

Does the loan cover the battery?

The battery is part of the vehicle, so it is financed as part of the price. The loan does not cover a replacement later. Read the manufacturer's battery warranty carefully, including the years, kilometre limit and conditions, because replacement outside warranty can be costly.

What tenure can I get on an electric two wheeler loan?

Typically 12 to 60 months. Some lenders offer longer terms that match the battery warranty. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises total interest. Choose a term that does not outlast the battery warranty if you can.

Can I get a loan for a low-speed electric scooter?

It may be difficult. Low-speed models may not need registration, and lenders usually need a registration certificate to record hypothecation. Some lenders may offer unsecured finance instead at a higher rate. Check with the lender before choosing the model.

How does resale value work for an electric scooter?

It depends on battery health, brand, age and service history. Used EV values are less certain than for petrol scooters. Borrow carefully, avoid very long tenures and keep service and charging records, which help when you sell or if the lender asks.
