₹10,000 Personal Loan: EMI, Fees and How to Borrow It Safely

By KhatuLoans Editorial Team, edited by Hemant Kumar · Updated · Information only, not a lender

A ₹10,000 personal loan is typically offered by RBI-registered NBFCs and digital lenders over 3 to 12 months. At 26% a year the EMI is about ₹1,795 over 6 months or ₹955 over 12 months, with total interest of roughly ₹772 or ₹1,464. A flat fee of ₹299 plus GST raises the effective annual cost of the 6-month loan to about 39%, and a ₹599 fee to about 53%, so compare the APR in the Key Fact Statement before you accept.

Is ₹10,000 your first loan? Read this first

For many people a ₹10,000 loan is their first formal borrowing, and it creates their first credit-bureau record. That is an opportunity and a risk. Repaid on time, a small loan starts a credit history that makes the next, bigger loan cheaper. Missed or rolled over, it creates a negative record that can take a year or more of clean payments to repair.

So size the loan to your next one or two salaries, not to the limit the app offers you. If the need is a specific purchase, such as a refrigerator or a phone, compare a consumer durable loan at the store: many are offered as “no-cost EMI”, where the retailer gives up a discount to cover the interest. Check whether a processing fee applies, because that becomes your real cost. For a cash need, choose a lender whose app is listed in the RBI’s Digital Lending Apps directory, and set the EMI date just after your salary arrives.

EMI for a ₹10,000 personal loan

Here is the EMI for ₹10,000 at three rates common in small-ticket lending. Over 6 months, moving from 18% to 36% adds only about ₹90 a month. Tenure has a bigger effect: stretching from 6 to 12 months nearly halves the EMI but roughly doubles the total interest.

6 months₹1,755₹1,795₹1,846₹772

What fees do to the real cost of ₹10,000

On a small loan the processing fee, not the interest, is usually the biggest cost. A flat fee of a few hundred rupees looks harmless, but spread over a three-to-six-month loan it can push the effective annual cost far above the advertised rate. The table shows the same loan with different fees, so you can see the true price before you tap accept.

Processing fee (+18% GST)Fee you payMoney in handEffective annual cost (APR)
No fee₹0₹10,00026%
Flat ₹299₹353₹9,64738.9%
Flat ₹599₹707₹9,29352.7%
3% of the loan₹354₹9,64639%

Assumes the fee is deducted from the disbursal, which is common, and an EMI of ₹1,795 for 6 months at a 26% interest rate. The APR is the rate that makes your EMIs repay only the money you actually received.

Who lends small amounts, and how to stay safe

Loans below about ₹30,000 come mostly from RBI-registered NBFCs through mobile apps, often in partnership with a bank, plus pre-approved small-ticket offers inside some banking apps. Approval is fast because the lender reads your bank statement or account-aggregator data instead of asking for paperwork, and tenures are short, typically 3 to 12 months.

Speed is also what attracts illegal lenders. Under the RBI’s Digital Lending Directions, a genuine app must disburse straight into your bank account from the regulated lender, give you a Key Fact Statement with the APR before you sign, and must not demand access to your contacts or photo gallery. Since 1 July 2025 the RBI website also hosts a public directory of Digital Lending Apps linked to regulated entities, so you can check an app before installing it. If an app fails any of these tests, walk away; harassment and data misuse follow almost always. Report unauthorised lenders on the RBI’s Sachet portal or the national cybercrime helpline, 1930.

Before you borrow ₹10,000: a quick checklist

  • Borrow only for a gap your next salary will close; a small loan that is rolled over turns into a debt spiral.
  • Deny any app permission to read your contacts, photos or call logs; regulated lenders do not need them.
  • Confirm the app and its lending partner appear in the RBI’s Digital Lending Apps directory.
  • Choose a repayment date two or three days after your salary credit to avoid bounce charges.

₹10,000 loan: frequently asked questions

What is the EMI for a 10,000 loan for 12 months?

About Rs 917 at 18%, Rs 955 at 26% and Rs 1,005 at 36% a year. Over 12 months at 26% you pay around Rs 1,464 in interest, plus any processing fee.

Which is cheaper for 10,000: a personal loan or no-cost EMI?

For a specific purchase, a genuine no-cost EMI is often cheaper, because the retailer absorbs the interest through a discount. Check two things: whether a processing fee applies, and whether you lose a cash discount by choosing EMI. For a cash need, a personal loan is the only option of the two.

Will a 10,000 loan improve my credit score?

Paid on time, it starts or strengthens your credit history, which can help future applications. The effect is gradual, and it is not worth borrowing purely to build a score. One missed EMI does more damage than several on-time loans do good.

Can I get a 10,000 loan with no credit history?

Yes, several regulated lenders approve new-to-credit borrowers for small amounts based on bank-statement income. Expect a rate towards the higher end of the range and a short tenure, which lenders use to limit their risk on a first loan.

How many days does it take to repay a 10,000 loan?

You choose the tenure, usually between 3 and 12 months, and repay in monthly EMIs. A few lenders offer shorter, single-repayment loans of 30 to 60 days; these often have the highest effective cost once fees are counted, so compare the APR before choosing one.

Do small personal loans affect my CIBIL score?

Yes, both ways. Every loan from a regulated lender is reported to the credit bureaus, so on-time repayment slowly builds your history and a missed EMI damages it just as much as on a large loan. Several small loans taken close together also show up as multiple enquiries and active accounts, which lenders read as credit stress.

How do I know a loan app is genuine?

Check three things before installing: the app or its lending partner is listed in the RBI's Digital Lending Apps directory, the money will come from the regulated lender directly to your bank account, and you get a Key Fact Statement before signing. An app that asks for contact-list access or an upfront fee is a red flag.
