₹30,000 Personal Loan: EMI, Fees and Where Bank Offers Begin

By KhatuLoans Editorial Team, edited by Hemant Kumar · Updated · Information only, not a lender

A ₹30,000 personal loan is repaid over 6 to 12 months by most lenders. At 26% a year the EMI is about ₹5,386 for 6 months or ₹2,866 for 12 months, with total interest of about ₹2,316 or ₹4,391. At 18%, which banks offer to good profiles, the 12-month EMI is about ₹2,750. A ₹599 fee raises the 6-month loan’s effective annual cost to about 35%; a 3% fee to about 39%.

At ₹30,000, check your bank before an app

This is roughly where the market changes. Below it, small-ticket app lenders dominate; from here up, many banks start offering pre-approved personal loans to their salary-account customers, often at lower rates and with lower fees. If your salary is credited to a bank account, open that bank’s app first and look for a pre-approved offer before applying anywhere else.

A common reason for borrowing this amount in cities is a rental deposit: landlords in metros often ask for two to three months’ rent upfront, and in Bengaluru it can be more. A deposit is refundable, so plan the tenure to end around the time you will get it back, or prepay from the refund. Whatever the purpose, at this size the difference between an 18% bank loan and a 30%-plus app loan is about ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 over a year, which is worth ten minutes of comparison.

The table compares EMIs at 18%, 26% and 36%. At this amount the rate starts to matter: over 12 months, 36% instead of 18% costs about ₹260 more a month, or roughly ₹3,000 over the year.

What fees do to the real cost of ₹30,000

On a small loan the processing fee, not the interest, is usually the biggest cost. A flat fee of a few hundred rupees looks harmless, but spread over a three-to-six-month loan it can push the effective annual cost far above the advertised rate. The table shows the same loan with different fees, so you can see the true price before you tap accept.

Processing fee (+18% GST)Fee you payMoney in handEffective annual cost (APR)
No fee₹0₹30,00026%
Flat ₹299₹353₹29,64730.2%
Flat ₹599₹707₹29,29334.6%
3% of the loan₹1,062₹28,93839%

Assumes the fee is deducted from the disbursal, which is common, and an EMI of ₹5,386 for 6 months at a 26% interest rate. The APR is the rate that makes your EMIs repay only the money you actually received.

Who lends small amounts, and how to stay safe

Loans below about ₹30,000 come mostly from RBI-registered NBFCs through mobile apps, often in partnership with a bank, plus pre-approved small-ticket offers inside some banking apps. Approval is fast because the lender reads your bank statement or account-aggregator data instead of asking for paperwork, and tenures are short, typically 3 to 12 months.

Speed is also what attracts illegal lenders. Under the RBI’s Digital Lending Directions, a genuine app must disburse straight into your bank account from the regulated lender, give you a Key Fact Statement with the APR before you sign, and must not demand access to your contacts or photo gallery. Since 1 July 2025 the RBI website also hosts a public directory of Digital Lending Apps linked to regulated entities, so you can check an app before installing it. If an app fails any of these tests, walk away; harassment and data misuse follow almost always. Report unauthorised lenders on the RBI’s Sachet portal or the national cybercrime helpline, 1930.

Before you borrow ₹30,000: a quick checklist

  • Keep screenshots of the Key Fact Statement and repayment schedule until the loan is closed.
  • Read the Key Fact Statement: compare the APR, not the monthly rate or the fee alone.
  • Never pay a "processing" or "insurance" fee upfront to get a loan approved. Genuine lenders deduct fees from the disbursal.
  • Ask your employer about a salary advance before borrowing; it is often interest-free.

₹30,000 loan: frequently asked questions

What is the EMI for a 30,000 loan for 6 months?

About Rs 5,266 at 18%, Rs 5,386 at 26% and Rs 5,538 at 36% a year. At 26% the total interest over 6 months is about Rs 2,316, before any fee.

Can I get a 30,000 loan from my bank instead of an app?

Often yes, if your salary is credited to that bank. Many banks show pre-approved personal loan offers in their mobile app for amounts like this, usually at lower rates and fees than app lenders. If there is no pre-approved offer, a regular application is possible but takes longer.

Is a personal loan good for a rental deposit?

It can work, because the deposit comes back at the end of the lease. Keep the tenure short and plan to prepay from the refund. Check whether your employer offers a rent or relocation advance first, since that is often interest-free.

What documents do I need for 30,000?

Usually just PAN, Aadhaar for eKYC and proof of income, which may be your last 3 salary slips or 3 to 6 months of bank statements. Pre-approved offers from your bank often need only an OTP.

Is 30,000 enough to qualify for a bank's lowest rate?

The rate depends on your profile more than the amount. Small loans do tend to cost a little more because the lender's fixed costs are spread over less money, but a strong credit score and salary account can still get you a bank rate well below app lending rates.

Do small personal loans affect my CIBIL score?

Yes, both ways. Every loan from a regulated lender is reported to the credit bureaus, so on-time repayment slowly builds your history and a missed EMI damages it just as much as on a large loan. Several small loans taken close together also show up as multiple enquiries and active accounts, which lenders read as credit stress.

How do I know a loan app is genuine?

Check three things before installing: the app or its lending partner is listed in the RBI's Digital Lending Apps directory, the money will come from the regulated lender directly to your bank account, and you get a Key Fact Statement before signing. An app that asks for contact-list access or an upfront fee is a red flag.
