How Old Can a Car Be and Still Get a Loan?

Written by KhatuLoans Editorial Team · Edited by Hemant Kumar, Founder and Editor · Updated · Information only, not a loan provider

Most loan providers cap a used car's age, either when you buy it, when the loan would end, or both, and the cap differs by loan provider and by whether the seller is a dealer or an individual. The older the car, the shorter the tenure the loan provider will give, and some cars are simply too old to finance. Ask each loan provider for its limit in writing before you choose a car.

How the age rule works

Loan providers usually express the limit in one of two ways. The first is the car's age at purchase, say, the car must be no more than a set number of years old when you apply. The second is the car's age at the end of the loan, which is the car's age today plus the tenure you want. The second rule is the stricter one. A car that passes the first test can fail the second if you ask for a long tenure, which is why a loan provider may offer a shorter tenure on an older car rather than refuse it.

A worked example

Suppose a loan provider allows a car to be up to a certain age when the loan ends. You pick a car that is already several years old and ask for a five-year loan. Add the five years to the car's current age and compare it with the loan provider's ceiling. If the total is over the limit, you can ask for a shorter tenure, pick a younger car, or try a loan provider with a higher ceiling. That one subtraction saves you from paying an advance for a car that cannot be financed. We do not quote a single national cap because loan providers set their own and change them, so confirm the figure with each one.

Why loan providers care

The car is the loan provider's security. An older car loses value faster, costs more to repair and is harder to resell if you default. A loan provider that expects to recover its money by selling the car will not lend for longer than the car is likely to keep a useful resale value. That is also why the loan amount is based on valuation and why older cars attract higher rates.

If your car is too old

You have three options. You can ask a loan provider with a higher cap, usually an NBFC, accepting a higher rate. You can reduce the tenure so the car passes the end-of-loan test. Or you can use a personal loan, which does not depend on the car's age, though it is usually costlier. Compare the total cost of each in the EMI calculator before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum age of a car for a used car loan?

Each loan provider sets its own, as an age at purchase, an age at the end of the loan, or both. We do not quote one national number because it varies. Ask the loan provider for its limit in writing.

Can I get a loan on a ten-year-old car?

Some loan providers do, usually with a shorter tenure and a higher rate. Others do not finance cars of that age. Check with each loan provider for your specific car.

Does the age rule apply to private sales too?

Yes, and some loan providers apply a stricter limit on a purchase from an individual. Ask which limit applies to your seller.

Why was the tenure cut on my older car?

The loan provider wants the loan to end while the car still has resale value. A shorter tenure on an older car is a common result of the end-of-loan age rule.
